Memorial Commisison

Composition

The Memorial Commission shall be composed of seven members who shall be residents of the city and consisting of the following: 2 members of the city council,  1 member of the chamber of commerce board of directors, and 4 residents of Aransas Pass. The 7 members shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the city council and shall serve without pay. The board shall select from its members a chairman, vice-chairman, and secretary, and shall adopt, subject to the approval of the Mayor and City Council, rules and regulations for the conduct of their proceedings

Duties

The commission shall act as an advisory to the Mayor and City Council in matters concerning proposed memorials to past or present individuals in the city, or civic organizations, or any proposed memorial of whatsoever nature; also act as an advisory to the city council regarding the present Seaman’s Memorial Tower; with approval of the city council adopt guidelines concerning memorials, and render opinions regarding types of memorials, aesthetics, appropriateness of proposed memorials, and recommend removal refurbishing, repair or other remedies necessary to insure the lasting beauty and appropriateness of existing or future memorials which have been authorized but not maintained by the sponsors; and promote close cooperation between the city and all private citizens, civic and youth organizations, and agencies interested in the commission’s functions.

Terms

Terms are two-year terms. Initially, there shall be 4 residents of the city, 2 members of the city council, and 1 member of the chamber of commerce board of directors. The seven members shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council and shall serve without pay. The board shall select from its members a chairman, vice-chairman, and secretary, and shall adopt, subject to the approval of the Mayor and City Council, rules and regulations for the conduct of their proceedings.

Meets

The board shall meet on call of the Chairman, or at the request of the City Council. Any member who is absent from 3 consecutive meetings without good cause, as determined by the remaining members of the board, shall be removed from the board and the city council. City Council shall fill the vacancy within 30 days from receipt of the notice of such removal.
