The Constitution mandates that every 10 years each resident living in the United States is counted.  The fact that this happens only once a decade makes it important to be counted.

Why?

  • It determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • It is used to make decisions on how billions of Federal funds flow into states and local communities.
  • It shapes development like health clinics, fire departments, schools and other services for families, senior citizens and children.
  • Census results affect planning and funding for education—including programs such as Head Start, Pell Grants, school lunches, rural education, adult education, and grants for preschool special education.
  • It can even affect decisions on roads and highways
  • Developers and faith-based organizations can use high level census data to determine where to invest
